Homemade Succulent and Cactus Potting Mix Recipe

The health of any houseplant starts with the soil is planted in. It doesn’t matter if the plant is beautiful and healthy when you purchase it, it won’t last for too long if the soil is poor in nutrients or simply, is not suitable for its specie. Planting any crop in the wrong soil won’t last or grow due to the lack of nutrition, pF level or moisture drainage.

When it comes to succulent and cactus, we all know that they need dry soil and are not so demanding when it comes to watering. Overwatering on the other hand may lead to plant’s death.

Succulents and Cacti Soil

Succulents and cacti thrive in dry environments and require their soil to dry out completely in between waterings. The best soil for them is made up of light, airy materials with excellent drainage. To achieve this, combine two parts sand, one part perlite, and three parts potting soil. This is the most known potting mix for succulents, but the below recipe will create the perfect environment for your succulents and cacti to grow and bloom harmoniously.

You Need:

  • 1 part compost
  • 1 part ground bark
  • 1 part sand
  • 1 part pumice

Mix these fantastic four ingredients to create the perfect potting soil for your succulents and cactus.

Important! When making potting mix for succulents, it’s best to use a light, porous soil as your base. Don’t use heavy garden soils, and don’t use potting mixes that contain vermiculite, or any type of moisture control potting mix that says it retains water longer than other mixes. Succulents need a well draining potting soil, not one that holds moisture.
